Mitchell Chaney Obituary

Mitchell Chaney was born December 1, 1962 in Childersburg, Alabama, to the late Oscar Jr. and
Mattie Chaney. He was the fourth of seven children born to this union. His brother, Oscar Chaney III,
preceded him in death. He attended Childersburg High School where he made his marked on the
basketball court. According to Michael “Catfish” Smith, the author the book “Closing the Show”; Mitchell
is one the all-time greatest basketball player in Talladega County. He was one the best Centers to ever
play at Childersburg High School. Mitchell enjoyed hunting and fishing. He volunteered with the Gerald
Wallace basketball camp. He was employed with Russell Mills in Sylacauga, Alabama and Concrete Wall
in Birmingham, Alabama until he became disabled.


He was united in married to Barbara McElrath who preceded him in death. He is survived by:
three (3) sons, Mitchell Jeffries, Birmingham, AL, Tamarcus Jeffries, Detroit, MI, and Cortney Jeffries,
Birmingham, Al; three (3) step children- Anthony (JaMisha) Jeffries, Birmingham, AL, Tony Powell, and
Cynthia (Willie) McCain; one (1) brother- Shedrick (Julia Faye) Chaney; four (4) sisters- Georgia (Dennis-
deceased) Carter, Marilyn (Walter) Brown, both of Sylacauga, AL, Lillie Chaney of Fort Payne, AL, and
Sharika Chaney of Lithonia, GA.; one (1) stepsister- Mary Etta Gamble of Jackson, AL; to (2) uncles-
Jeremiah Chaney, Harvest, AL and Isaiah Chaney, Pennington, AL.; and four (4) aunts: Mary Cooper,
Indianapolis, IN, Dorothy Dubose, Arizona, Leola Portis, Ward, AL and Elizabeth Murphy of Mobile, AL.
Mitchell Chaney is also survived by nine (9) grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins;
also, by special friends Regina Leonard & Curtis Fowler; and a Very Special Friend and Caregiver, Gerald
Wallace.
