Annie Jo Leonard Obituary

Sylacauga, Alabama - On June 19, 1945, God blessed Sylacauga, Alabama, with the life of Annie Jo Alexander Leonard. Born to the late Louis Alexander and Annie Mae Alexander, Annie Jo was raised with deep roots in faith, family, and hard work, values that she carried throughout her life.

For 80 years, Annie lived with quiet strength, humility, and determination. There was always work to be done, and Annie Jo was never one to let it wait. Whether serving her family, helping others, or working with her hands, Annie believed in showing up faithfully and giving her best in all she did.

She received her education at East Highland High School and furthered her studies at Selma University and Stillman College. Annie believed in doing things the right way and doing them well. That conviction shaped every part of her life: as a woman of faith, a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a faithful member of her community.

At an early age, Annie gave her heart to God at Rising Star Baptist Church. After marrying James Robert Leonard in 1968, she united with Harper Springs Baptist Church, where she worshiped and served faithfully for many years, for as long as her health permitted. During her years of active service, Annie worked on the Usher Board, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, worked in the church kitchen, and served through the food bank ministry. Whatever the need, Annie was always willing to help. Serving others was simply a part of who she was.

Mrs. Leonard worked at the B. B. Comer Memorial Library for 30 years before retiring. She was known for her kindness, dependability, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her gentle spirit and caring heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

But perhaps Annie was best known for her remarkable work ethic and quiet strength. She never met a hard job she could not handle. Whether digging ditches, painting walls, cutting grass, or climbing onto a rooftop to lay shingles alongside her husband, Annie approached every task without complaint. She worked steadily, humbly, and faithfully, never seeking recognition for what she did. Her actions spoke for her.

She also had a special way of making people feel loved and cared for. Sometimes it was through a warm meal, a batch of homemade cookies, a helping hand, or a simple act of kindness that arrived right when it was needed most. Annie loved deeply, gave freely, and made the lives of those around her better simply by being herself.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Annie Mae Alexander, and her brother, Alvin Alexander.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband, James Robert Leonard; two loving daughters, Zonja (Dwight) Coleman and Michelle (George) Grimes; three grandchildren, Alexander Coleman, Chemese (Roger) Lynch, and Morgan Grimes; three great-grandchildren, Chandler, Jacob, and Emory Lynch; two brothers, Louis (Jeanette) Alexander, Jr. and Deryl Alexander; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Ann Alexander, Delois Wilson, Mary Tuck, Patricia Leonard, and Betty (Ode) Leonard; brothers-in-law, Clarence (Diane) Leonard, Matthew (Shirley) Leonard, and Donnie (Mary) Leonard; a special family friend, Dwyaine Jackson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Though Annie Jo Leonard has departed this earthly life, the love she shared, the lives she touched, the meals she cooked, the songs she sang, and the work she so faithfully carried out will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She was, in every sense of the word, a woman who finished the work.

"Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord." (Matthew 25:23)
