Childersburg, Alabama - Betty Jean Moon, affectionately known as “Moon,” was born on February 3, 1945, in Childersburg, Alabama, to the late Bessemer Samuels and Earline Samuels. She was one of their beloved children, growing up surrounded by faith, family, and community.
Betty was educated in the Talladega County School System and graduated with the Phyllis Wheatley High School Class of 1964. She later went on to dedicate more than 18 years of service with the Department of Human Resources for the State of Alabama, where she touched countless lives with her compassion, kindness, and commitment to helping others.
At an early age, Betty accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with Mount Olive Baptist Church in Childersburg, Alabama. She faithfully served as an usher and was a member of the Missionary Department, where her devotion and love for God’s people were evident in all she did.
On September 29, 2025, Betty peacefully departed this life at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessemer and Earline Samuels; and her brothers, Percy Samuels and George Samuels, sister, Nellie Swain.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving daughter, Alfreda D. “Penny” Moon of Childersburg, AL; four devoted sisters, Gracie Coleman of Childersburg, AL, Ada S. Hale of Bronx, NY, Mae Frances Cooke of Childersburg, AL, and Glenda S. Toney of Chattanooga, TN; two brothers-in-law, T. L. Swain, Jr. and Norman N. Toney, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Ann Samuels; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many cherished friends.
Betty will forever be remembered for her loving spirit, her dedication to her family, her faithfulness to her church, and the joy she brought to those around her. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
