Sylacauga, Alabama - Mr. Briggs Braxton Leonard, affectionately known as “Soldier Boy” and “Slick,” was born on May 29, 1939, in Sylacauga, Alabama, to the late Samatha Dortch Leonard and Braxton Leonard.

At an early age, Briggs accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and united with Saint Thomas United Methodist Church in Sylacauga, Alabama, where he remained grounded in his faith.

Briggs received his education in the Sylacauga school system and was a graduate of East Highland High School. He continued his education at N. F. Nunnelley State Technical College, where he earned a degree in Business.

Mr. Leonard began his professional career with the State of Alabama ABC Store, where he faithfully served for many years as a manager. His leadership and dedication were recognized when he was featured as a Top Manager in the 1983 Store of the Year article. He had served as store manager since November 1982 and later also became manager of the Talladega ABC Store. In his earlier years, Briggs also worked as a cab driver.

Briggs proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enlisted in August 1963 and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service in Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army in August 1965.

Known for his warm personality and gift for conversation, Briggs truly loved to talk and spend time with others. He enjoyed walking at different walking tracks, loved his family dearly, and found enjoyment in visiting the casino. His presence, stories, and spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Briggs Braxton Leonard departed this walk of life on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samatha Dortch Leonard and Braxton Leonard; brothers, John L. Leonard and Caleb S. Leonard; son, Lamont Leonard; and daughter, Crystal Wilson Leonard.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving sister, Frances Louise Harris; devoted companion of 34 years, Mary T. McGregor; stepchildren, Tommie L. McGregor, Shelia (Billy) Fowler, Michael (Veronica) McGregor, Sherry Millender, Venika Harvey, and Felesha Moon; grandchildren, Dontavius McGregor and Daris McGregor; two special cousins, Jean Calhoun and Cassandra Dortch; special friend, Jackie Harrison; special caregiver, Christine Grayson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

Celebration of life for Briggs Braxton Leonard, age 87, will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 1:00PM at Community Funeral Home Chapel, Sylacauga, Alabama.  Apostle Henry D. Traylor, Eulogist. Interment will commence in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Sylacauga, Alabama.  Visitation | Public viewing will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026 1:00PM to 7:00PM at Community Funeral Home.
