Dorothy Mae Shorter earthly journey began on March 30, 1936, in Talladega County, Alabama, to the parentage of Atticus Shorter and Ressie Mae Martin Shorter. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and united with New Hope Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama. She served many years as a pre-school and toddler Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Secretary, Church Clerk, and on the Usher board. Dorothy received her formal education from Sylacauga City School system at East Highland High School, Sylacauga, Alabama.
Dorothy began her work career and was a dedicated employee for over 30 years with Wallace Laundry & Dry Cleaners. She retired in 2014. Dorothy was fondly known by her family and friends as "Granny" or "Ms. Dot". She was active as a volunteer at the local food pantry and enjoyed singing and praying for those in nursing facilities on the weekend. Granny enjoyed studying the Word of God and spending time with her family on the front porch.
Dorothy departed this walk of life on July 25, 2022, under the care of UAB Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Atticus and Ressie Mae Shorter, brother, Atticus Earl Shorter, sister, Helen Shealey, and God sister, Willie Ella Graham Washington.
Ms. Dot’s love will forever be cherished by her loving daughter, Belinda Shorter Russell of Sylacauga, AL; one grandson, Neal Russell of Tuscaloosa, AL; two granddaughters, Arricka (Duane) Player, Talladega, AL, Nedra Cameron, Calera, AL; three great grandchildren, Justian Russell of Koblenz, Germany, Angelique Russell of Koblenz, Germany, and Jordyn Gilliard of Talladega, AL; three nephews, Sylvester (Barbara) Shealey of Sylacauga, AL, Luther Earl (Jennifer) Shorter of Sylacauga, AL, and Lucius Shorter of Dayton, OH; and a host of other relatives and friends.
