Ethel (Kay) Looney was the second of three daughters born to Willis Samuel and Willie Pearl Knox in Sylacauga, Alabama on April 15, 1946. She and her two sisters, Mary Ann Brown (David-Atlanta, GA) and Jacqueline Marie Burns (Johnnie Lee- Childersburg, AL) grew up in Gantts Quarry, AL. At the time her death she was an active member of Jacob’s Chapel Christian Methodist church in Talladega, Alabama. Kay taught the Women's Sunday School Class; she was the soloist in the Sanctuary Choir, as well as the Financial Secretary. She was also the President of the Missionary Society.
A graduate of East Highland High School, she attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa for one year before returning to Sylacauga to raise her family.
Personal Life:
Kay lived a life of positivity, but fiercely protected and defended people and issues near to her heart. She marched for Civil Rights in the 60’s while at college and was quick to defend her honor or that of her sisters by any means necessary. An avid reader, she loved history, particularly Black History and was a great fan of Shaka Zulu. Kay was many things to many people. She provided for her family by working long hours and making sacrifices too numerous to count and she provided for the community through her church by actively participating in the “Meals on Wheels” Program. Kay was incredibly optimistic. No matter how her day was going, when asked she would reply “WONDERFULLY WELL.”
Family:
Kay was the mother of four boys; Samuel Patrick Looney (Eufaula Alabama), Baylen Kendall Looney (Waldorf Maryland), Jonathan Bainbridge Looney (Michelle-Sylacauga, AL) and Jason Christopher Looney (Laquita-Lakeland, FL). She has 9 Grand Children; Jourdan Borrell Looney (Los Angeles, California), Jaquisha Harris (Anniston, Alabama), Joshua Borrell Looney (Norfolk, Virginia), Marquel Looney (deceased) Jeremiah Borrell Looney (Charleston, South Carolina), Jadon Harrison Looney (Lakeland, FL), Jagger Knox Looney (Lakeland, FL), Quin Wilson (Sylacauga, Al) and Karis Mitchell (Springfield, VA).
