J.W. McElrath Obituary

Sylacauga, Alabama - J.W. McElrath was born on October 13, 1943, in Sylacauga, Alabama, to the late Willie McElrath and Irene Thomas McElrath. Affectionately known by many as “Babyface,” “Tire Man,” and “Ice Cream Man,” he was a well-known and beloved figure throughout his community.

J.W. received his education at J.D. Thompson High School in Coosa County, Alabama. At an early age, he joined Union Baptist Church in Stewartville, Alabama, where he remained a faithful member.

Throughout his life, J.W. was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He held various occupations over the years, including working at Shell Cast, Parker Fertilizer, State Green, and City Tire. He also worked as a truck driver and was widely recognized for his time as the neighborhood “Ice Cream Man,” bringing joy to countless children and families.

J.W. was a kind-hearted and friendly individual who never met a stranger. His warm spirit, bright smile, and signature wave left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing, and took great pride in barbecuing for his family and friends. His presence brought people together, and his love for his family and community was evident in all that he did.

He departed this life on April 23, 2026, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, surrounded by his loved ones.

J.W. was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Irene McElrath; his beloved wife, Bessie Ann McElrath; his sister, Roberta McElrath; his brothers, Clyde, Claude, Curtis, Willie, Gusta, Dexter, and Billy McElrath; and his brothers, Edward Sims and John Lewis Thomas.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving sons, Willie Lee (Teresa) McElrath and Broziski (Belinda) McElrath, both of Sylacauga, Alabama; his grandchildren, Keyanna, Jasmine JaNae, Jarvis, Justin, Jasmine Rena, Jade, and Talisha; great grandchildren, Zayden, Nashiia, Marion, Sereanna, and Kelix; his stepbrothers, Walter Sims and Roy Sims, both of Sylacauga, Alabama; close family member to the sons, Consuela McGowan; and a host of special grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

J.W.’s legacy of love, kindness, and service will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
