Clarksville, Tennessee - A precious one from us is gone, a voice we love is still, and a place is vacant in our home that can never be filled. On December 9, 1965, Lucy Pearl Garrett welcomed her handsome baby boy, James Earl Garrett in Talladega County, Alabama. He was later raised by his grandparents, Rev. S.F. Garrett, Queen Ann Taylor and Mary Garrett. He departed this walk of life on December 13, 2024, under the care of Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Affectionately known as “Jesse” accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He united his faith and became a member of Sunrise Baptist Church and Mt. Sinia Baptist Church in Rockford, Alabama. He was a product and received his education in Talladega County, Alabama at B.B. Comer Memorial High School. James was a part of the Tiger football team, while receiving his education at, B.B. Comer. He graduated with the class of 1984.
Shortly after receiving his education James enlisted with the United States Army in 1985. While serving in the armed forces he was awarded with many Decorations, Medals, Badges, and Ribbons. He was ranked Staff Sergeant (SSG). After 20 years of service, James retired from the US Army on November 11, 2005. James later became a dedicated employee with CSX Transportation in Nashville, Tennessee. While being a resident in Tennessee, James united his faith and became a member of Top-Notch Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading and teaching God’s Holy word, during Sunday School.
Along Jame’s life's journey he met and united in Holy Matrimony with Martha Russie on February 14. Family was important to James, he loved traveling and had a passion for fishing. During football season, you could find James cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide and Pittsburgh Steelers.
James was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rev. S.F. Garrett, mother, Lucy P. Garrett, grandmother, Mary Garrett, sister, Pearlie Mae Garrett Milliner, brother, Jimmie Garrett, son, James E. Garrett, Jr., and nephew, Brian Garrett. His love will forever be cherished by his loving wife of 36 years, Martha Garrett, of Clarksville, TN; children, Kayla (Crandon Glenn) Garrett of Clarksville, TN, Javonte’ T. Garrett of Japan, and Jaylon D. Garrett of Clarksville, TN; grandchildren, Jayla Garrett, Leighanna Garrett, Laquila Garrett, and Crandon Glenn, Jr.; one brother, Frank Garrett of Sylacauga, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Celebration of life for James Earl Garrett, age 59, will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 12:00 Noon at Community Funeral Home Chapel, Sylacauga, Alabama. Pastor Jonnie Aldridge, Eulogist. Interment will commence in the Bakers Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Vincent, Alabama. Public viewing will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024, 1:00PM to 7:00PM at Community Funeral Home.
