Sylacauga, Alabama - Jimmie Cook, a dedicated and hardworking man, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous 12-year battle with prostate cancer. On May 12, 1952, Elizabeth Samuels Nix Cook and Eugene Cook, welcomed their handsome baby boy, Jimmie Cook. They raised him in Childersburg, Alabama. He received his education in the Talladega County School System and attended Childersburg High School, where Jimmie was a proud member of the Tiger’s football team. He graduated with the class of 1970.
Jimmie accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He united his faith and became a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Childersburg, Alabama, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama, and later New Hope Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama.
In 1974, Jimmie enlisted in the United States Army National Guard, beginning his service at Fort Dix, New Jersey. During his military career, he excelled as a sharpshooter and served as a Medical Specialist and Ammo Storage Specialist, receiving an honorable discharge in 1985.
Jimmie was a man of strong work ethic, dedicating over a decade to Shellcast Steel Corporation as a steelworker and furnace operator. Later, he joined Alabama Power, where he worked diligently from 2002 until 2010, when an injury prevented him from continuing his career. In 2013, Jimmie was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite the many challenges he faced, he approached each day with courage and faith, inspiring those around him with his resilience. Jimmie Cook was united in holy matrimony to Carrie Mae Cook for 22 years and they had 2 beautiful daughters, Kim and Keisha. In 2018 he united in matrimony to Tabitha Cook and they had one handsome son, Martayvious McElrath.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his father, Eugene "Doodie" Cook, his brother, Eugene Cook, and his sister, Elizabeth Cook. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and strength that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Tabitha Cook, and his three children: Kim Merriweather (Kenneth), Keisha Hunter (Dabney), and Martayvious McElrath. Jimmie was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Jordan Merriweather, Joshua Merriweather, Javen Hunter, Jason Merriweather, and Khari Drew McElrath. He also leaves behind three siblings, Eddie Cook (Georgia), Jerry Cook (California), and Terry Cook (Arizona), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will cherish his memory forever.
Jimmie will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his faith, and his community. His life was a testament to perseverance and the power of hope in the face of adversity.
Celebration of life for Jimmie Cook, age 72, will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama. Pastor Bobby L. Harris, Officiating. Interment will commence in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Sylacauga, Alabama. Public viewing will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024 1:00PM to 7:00PM at Community Funeral Home.
