Sylacauga, Alabama - John Milton McElrath was born on December 3, 1938, in Sylacauga, Alabama, to the late Milton McElrath and Janie Russell McElrath. From the beginning of his earthly journey, he was rooted in faith, family, and hard work—values that guided him throughout his life.
John accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church in Sylacauga, Alabama, where he remained committed to his church family and spiritual walk.
A dedicated and dependable worker, John was employed with Pursell Farms for over 20 years. He took great pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic. Outside of his career, John found peace and joy in farming and gardening—passions that reflected his love for the land and the simple blessings of life.
John was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Betty Jean Lasley, and together they shared a life built on love, commitment, and devotion to family.
On January 18, 2026, John Milton McElrath peacefully departed this walk of life at his residence in Sylacauga, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton McElrath and Janie R. McElrath; his siblings, Terry McElrath, Bobby McElrath, Henry McElrath, Sr., James Winston McElrath, Ishmen McElrath, Mary L. McElrath, Linda Patrick, and Lela Carter.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Betty Jean McElrath; two daughters, Gloria McElrath and Tabitha Cook; two sons, Kenneth (Karen) McElrath and Fredrick (Jackie) McElrath; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Burns, Helen Townsend, and Peggy Gilder; four brothers, Willie Lee McElrath, Edward McElrath, David Ray McElrath, and Marvin McElrath; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
John Milton McElrath will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love for family, his faith in God, and the legacy of hard work and love he leaves behind.
