Kelvin Dewayne Dates Obituary

Born on July 9th, 1978, in Sylacauga Alabama, Kelvin (Boo Boo) Dates was the son of Clara Dates and Alvin Smith. Growing up, he was instilled the value of love, unity, and hard work within his close-knit family, shaping the kindhearted man he became.

Attending B. B. Comer High School, Kelvin was an exceptional athlete who excelled on the football field. His determination and skill inspired his teammates and brought pride to his school and community following a great football season his senior year. After graduating Kelvin enlisted in the Army Reserve and served our country honorably. Kelvin also joined the workforce employed by Avondale Mills, Madix, Georgia Pacific, Energy Absorption, and his last civilian employment with New South Express until he became disabled.

A man of simple pleasures, Kelvin cherished spending time with his family. As an avid sports fan, he could always be found cheering on the Lakers, the 49’ers and his beloved “ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE.” ROLL TIDE!!!

If you knew Kelvin, you know he was a well-known loveable individual who never met a stranger, and he was definitely “ONE TO KNOW AND ONE YOU WOULDN’T FORGET”.

Along the path on Kelvin’s earthly journey, he met and married his soulmate Celestra Collins Dates whom he loved and cherished. They shared 18 loving years together.

Kelvin was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, and friend. His Kind heart, hard work ethic, giving spirit and his willingness to help others was immeasurable. His presence will be missed immensely by his loved ones and friends.

Kelvin transitioned from this life to a peaceful rest in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on Thursday February 8, 2024, reuniting with his aunt, Mae Joyce Date, uncle, Johnny Dates, cousins, Louis Dates and Azekiel Borden.

Kelvin has left behind fun and loving memories that will be forever treasured by his loving and devoted wife, Celestra Dates; sons, Devin Dates, Sherod Scales, Desmond Collins (Shay), Qurienton Scales, Jartavus Walker, Vick Collins Sr (Miranda); daughters, Da’Kyla Dates, Leah (Dates) Grant, and Brittney Collins; parents, Clara Dates and Alvin Smith; siblings, Bronski Wesley, Nikki Payne (Andre), Alvin Smith Jr, Terrance Smith (Sherry), Maria Smith, Alexander Dates and Tiffini Madden; grandmother, Mae “Granny” Dates; sixteen loving grandchildren; mother in law, Gloria Collins;  sister in law, Yakima Collins; brother in laws, William Collins, and Walter Shealey; loving aunts, Melissa Dates (Benny), Darlene Dates, Jacqueline Dates, Dorothy Carter and Ackwadnette Smith; uncles, Edward Dates, James Dates (Farah), David Council, Calvin Cook (Willie Dell), and Alfred L. Cook; loving caregiver and cousin, YaKeshia “Panny” Dates; special thanks to Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Hospice; and a host of family and friends who will forever hold dear the memories they shared with him may he rest in peace knowing that he was deeply loved and will remain in our hearts forever.
