LD Griffin was born on March 4, 1927, in Sylacauga, Alabama, the son of Stinel and Emma Griffin. He attended school in Sylacauga, Alabama, and graduated from East Highland High School in 1944.
LD was baptized when he was 8 yrs old at Harper Spring Baptist Church.
LD served in the Navy Military branch from 1944-1946. He was a veteran of the Navy where he served his country with honor during World War II. His experience in the Navy played a very important role in his life. He frequently pointed out that the Navy taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself. Once discharged from the Military, LD returned to Sylacauga, Alabama, where he soon found employment at Kimberly Clark in Childersburg. In January 1957, he relocated to California with his wife Clara.
Once in California, LD found employment at Kiewit Construction company where he worked for multiple years before landing at the Marin Municipal Water District. After 34 years, he retired as a Valveman Supervisor. He was loved by his many customers and colleagues throughout the years.
LD and his wife Clara were married in 1956 and remained so for the rest of his life. LD and Clara birthed a son, who carries his name Lonnie Dan Griffin Jr.
LD was known to be the life of the party. He loved playing poker which included his Friday fish fry for family and poker buddies. He spent many summers traveling with family and friends from Marin City to his hometown Sylacauga, Alabama.
LD retired in 2004, and he and Clara returned to their hometown of Sylacauga, Alabama. During his retirement he enjoyed gardening which included growing collard greens, turnip greens, cabbage, tomatoes, and peppers. He also took pride in the upkeep of his yard. LD enjoyed and always looked forward to spending time with his son and grandchildren and listening to oldies but goodies. He was fond of Cowboy and Western shows and would stay up late nights watching the tube and sharing stories with his boys.
LD was preceded in death by both of his parents Stinel and Emma Griffin, his brother Roger Griffin, sister Ida B Westbrook, three sister in-laws Emma Breedlove, Clenzell Hogan, Ethel Smith, and his brother-in-law Robert Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Clara Griffin; his son, Lonnie Dan Griffin Jr. and daughter in-law Frenchelle Franklin-Griffin; his grandsons Lonnie Daniel Griffin III and Devin Griffin; his granddaughters Jimarielle Bowie and Jimariko Bowie; his great grandchildren Zaiden and Zhurina Landmesser; as well as the newest addition to the family, his great grandson Devin Griffin Jr. He is also survived by his brother PC Griffin, his two sister in-laws, Ida Hale and Anna Stephens, his brother in- law Joseph Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted Roary family.
