Leroy Johnson Obituary

Talladega, Alabama - Leroy Johnson was born on April 29, 1943, to parents Hazel and William Johnson in Talladega, Alabama. His family moved to Anderson, Indiana in September 1955 where Leroy attended Anderson High School. In April 1961, Leroy enlisted into the U.S. Army and while there was decorated with a Parachutist Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a Letter of Appreciation. He served for 3 years receiving an Honorable Discharge, earning rank of SP4 (T) E4. After leaving the Armed services, Leroy resided for a short period of time in Denver, CO with his sister’s family before returning to Anderson.

Leroy was a Jack of All Trades, and a Master of Some. During his lifetime he was employed as a Security Guard for General Motors (Delco Remy-Anderson, IN), Police Officer (Anderson City Police), Restaurant Manager (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), General Contractor (Dell City, Oklahoma), an Over-the-Road Semi Driver, and finally, a Master Plumber (Alabama). He had other odds and ends jobs throughout his colorful career. There was virtually nothing that he couldn’t do once he set his mind to it.

Like many of the McCarroll men, Leroy loved to cook and was masterful at it. He had a magnetic personality and could/would talk with anyone. Those who met him soon found out that he had the “gift of gab”, with a wealth of knowledge on many subjects. Leroy didn’t mind passing out advice and sharing his wisdom to anyone who would listen. He inspired so many of his relatives to excel in anything they wanted to accomplish. However, like so many others of us, he could also be as stubborn as a mule (some would say “a family trait”). One of his nephews said “He lived his life, his way”.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Smith Johnson and James Johnson, sisters Doris Avery and Loretta Robinson, and a daughter Erika Love.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Lebra Johnson-Lewis and Mercedes “Mercy” Johnson-Mills; two sons, Sean Johnson and James Streeter; 30 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Johnson and Paul (Phyllis) Johnson; sister Marie Sullis; special friend Juanita Hamilton; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Leroy Johnson will forever be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
