Goodwater, Alabama - Melinda Sue Smith was born on August 11, 1966, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Nellodean Cranford and Moody Colquitt. She peacefully departed this walk of life on November 7, 2025, at Coosa Valley Medical Center.
Melinda was a hardworking and dedicated woman who took pride in everything she did. She worked faithfully at Madix for 10 years and at Piggly Wiggly for more than 10 years. She also served as a waitress and bartender and was SERV Safe certified, a testament to her professionalism and care for others.
Melinda shared her life with the love of her life, Tim Smith, for 42 wonderful years. Together they built a beautiful family and a home filled with love, laughter, and devotion. She was a mother not only to her own children but to many others she helped raise — at home, on the softball field, and through the Girl Scouts.
She enjoyed playing pool and chess, camping, and spending time outdoors surrounded by her animals and the beauty of nature. Melinda found peace tending to her blueberry bushes, watching hummingbirds, and kayaking to see the Cahaba lilies. A passionate sports fan, she cheered for the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Above all, she loved being “MeMaw” — always making sure her grandchildren had their favorite snacks and felt loved beyond measure.
Melinda was preceded in death by her mother, Nellodean Cranford; father, Moody Colquitt; brothers, James Terry Colquitt and Ricky Colquitt; and her Pops/stepfather, Michael Cunniff.
Her loving memories will forever be cherished by her devoted husband, Tim Smith of Goodwater, Alabama; her beloved daughters, Michelle Smith of Anniston, Alabama; Amanda (Patrick) Bassett of Clanton, Alabama; Antonette (John) Starlin of Wedowee, Alabama; Tashia Smith of Thorsby, Alabama; Virginia Smith of Fort Payne, Alabama; and Abbeie Smith of Goodwater, Alabama. She also leaves behind her siblings, Tony Colquitt of Daytona, Florida; Randy Simmons of Fayette, Alabama; Jerry Simmons of Chicago, Illinois; Willodean (Mike) Moore of Chicago, Illinois; and Rosie (Elvin) Fallon of Hollins, Alabama.
Melinda’s grandchildren, Alexis Wills of Anniston, Bryar Smith of Anniston, Auburn Bassett of Clanton, Thomas Bassett of Clanton, Madalyn Bassett of Clanton, and Waylon River of Anniston, will continue to carry her love and legacy in their hearts. She is also survived by one dear aunt, Jackie of Berry, AL, along with a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her deeply.
Melinda Sue Smith’s warmth, humor, and unconditional love touched every life she encountered. Her memory will live on forever through the family and friends who were blessed to know and love her.
