Toya LaShawn Garrett Obituary

On March 1st, 1976, Mr. Toya LaShawn Garrett began his earthly journey to the parents of Larry Chatman and Edna Joyce Garrett in Talladega, Alabama.

At an early age Toya accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and united with St. Paul Methodist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama. Later on, April 17th, 2016, he united with Lane Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Covington, Kentucky.  Toya was a faithful and dedicated member at Lane Chapel, he served on the Trustee board under the Leadership of Pastor Charles J. Foggie, Jr. he was inspired by listening to Pastor Foggie words and teaching. 

Toya received his formal education in the Talladega and Sylacauga City School System. He later earned a welding certificate at Turner Job Corp. in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Along Toya’s life’s journey he met and united in Holy Matrimony to Ms. Anita Evett Henderson. 

Toya worked for several companies throughout his life and later became a dedicated employee with Filterbuy Inc. in Talladega, Alabama until his death.

Growing up Toya, enjoyed dancing and playing baseball and basketball.  He excelled in basketball and was known for his high jumping skills.  He coached young boys basketball for many years at Sylacauga Recreation Center (J. Craig Community Center).  Toya formed a special bond with every child he met.  He enjoyed entertaining family and friends and was known for his sense of humor.  He was an avid Alabama football fan “Roll Tide”.

Toya departed this walk of life on the 26th of January 2023 at his residence in Sylacauga, Alabama.  Reuniting with his parents, Larry Chatman and Edna Joyce Russell, grandparents, Lincoln Cunningham, Mary Frances McKenzie, Samuel and Mary Chatman, brothers, Ira Garrett (Big Stuff), and Michael Garrett, uncles, Mark Cleveland Chatman, James Chatman, Sr., Charles Chatman, Sr., Willie C. Chatman, Samuel Chatman, Jr., Daniel Chatman, William Chatman, and Lawrence Chatman, aunt, Willie Ruth, and beloved cousins.

His love will forever be cherished by his loving wife, Anita “Evett” Garrett; five loving children, Jamal T. Threatt, Devon J. Garrett, Jaelon Garrett, Khalise Garrett and DeShawn Garrett; step children, Brandon Henderson, Chad Henderson, and Bryana Kaiser; grandchildren, Ashton Garrett and Ariyah J. Garrett; sisters, Angela Garrett, Irish Garrett and Shuntavia Garrett; brothers, Cederic (Jasmine) Chatman, and Corey Chatman; uncles, Cleophus Garrett, Denson Garrett, Ambro Chatman, St. and Terry Chatman; aunts, Anna Patterson, Debra Mitchell Simmons, Martha K. Mitchell, Susie Chatman, and Carolyn McMillian; step mother, Barbara Ann Chatman; father in law, Robert Henderson, Sr.; sister in laws, Tyna (Marcus) Smith, Anitra Richardson, and Mia Jewell; brother in laws, Robert Henderson, Jr., Antonio Henderson, Demetrius Henderson, James Bybee, Jr. and Robert “Walt” Jewell; Godmother, Freddie Tanner; Special cousins, Richard Earl Garrett, and Ylander Curry; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other relatives and friends.
