Ulysses Jones Obituary

Ulysses Jones' earthly journey began on May 30, 1951, to the parents of John Henry Jones, Jr. and Jannie Ruth Morris Cox in Talladega County, Alabama.

Ulysses, affectionately known as “Sweetman” by family and friends, accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and united with Kingston Missionary Baptist Church, Alpine.  Later in life Sweetman was ordained as a Deacon and was a faithful and dedicated member at Kingston.

Sweetman received his education at R.R. Moton High School, and later joined the R. R. Moton Alumni Association.  He was employed with Bemiston Company, Crown Textile, and worked in construction with the local 559 in Birmingham, Alabama. During his retirement, Sweetman became known as the B-que Chief for the Alpine and Talladega Community.

Along Sweetman’s life’s journey he met and united in Holy Matrimony to Patricia A. Jones.  Sweetman was very affectionate and compassionate when it came to his family.  He loved spending time on the Grill cooking and was involved with his community.  His love for people never allowed him to meet a stranger. You could always hear Sweetman saying, “What’s up doc”, “I ain’t mad”, or “Love you and ain’t nothing, you can do about it”. Sweetman had a passion for music.

Sweetman was a former Mason in the Talladega County area.  He served as President of Magnificent 15 Plus 3 Social Savings Club for several years. He coached the Alpine Angels’ Softball Team for many years and successfully won numerous tournaments.

Sweetman departed this walk of life on December 8, 2023, under the care of Grandview Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Jones, Jr. and Jannie Ruth Cox, stepfather, Ozie Cox, and brother, Maurice Garrett.

Sweetman love will forever be remembered by his loving wife, Patricia A. Jones; loving sons, Pervis Smoot, Karun Phillips, Demetrius Montrell (LaKendra) Garrett, Warren J. Hall, and Cededrick Garrett; loving daughters, Taiwania (Derrick) Hunley-Hunter, Latasha (Richard) Williams, Franchesca Gilbert, and Jessica (Dante) Hall-Rey; loving sisters, Jannie (Michael) Keith, Donna Garrett, and Denita (Ronnie) Houston, Lori (Marshal) Pope; loving brothers, John Henry (Shirley) Jones, III, Roger Dale (Diane) Jones, and Houston (Debra) Jones; grandchildren, Carter Montrell Garrett, Chosyn Garrett, Jalen Gilbert, Kelton Wills, Karon Phillips, Zachore Gooden, Cali Garrett, Joslyn T. “A heart of gold stopped beating. Working hands at rest.  God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.  Leaves and flowers may wither, the golden sun may set, but the hearts that loved you dearly are the one that won’t forget.”
